Wushu 武术

The word 武 (wu) translated as 'Martial' in the Chinese martial arts culture has a long influence and profound meaning based on a set of moral codes.  It is actually a combination of two individual character 戈 (ge) which means 'weapons' and 止 (zhi) which means 'stop'.  The duo, when combined give rise to a complete meaning of ' to cease the battle'.
Probably in the name of honour or wanton desires and greeds, the history of wars in China were vastly recorded.  Fights between city states and different tribes during the Warring Period were common.  Therefore, the conception of ceasing a battle is crucial in order to prevent further bloodshed and unrest among the country.  War is imminent only when it is needed for self-defense.
Put that same ideology into an individual who wished to learn any martial arts today or to those who have acquired the techniques of the Chinese martial arts.  He should use his knowledge as a mean of self-defense and not revenge.  The more he knew about his trade, the more he should take his sense of morality into a new heights by exercising self-control under the moral conducts of respect, integrity, loyalty, peace and harmony.
